What is a permalink?

Answer

A permanent link, or "permalink" is a web address or URL that consistently (i.e. permanently) points to a specific online location.

Other terms:

  • stable link
  • stable URL
  • durable link
  • persistent link
  • document URL

Why can't I just copy the URL in the browser address bar?

That link might break! The URL in the address bar usually contains dynamically generated session-based or search-based information, so it is unique to that moment in time. It may not work later.

Note: A permalink is not the same as a doi.

What should I do instead?

Either find the permalink (examples below) or download the PDF. We recommend saving PDFs in a cloud-based storage option, such as Box, Dropbox, or Google Drive, so you will have access to your documents from anywhere!
